College Football Week 12

by Larry Leek

After such a GREAT weekend of college football last weekend this weeks games on paper at least, come NO WHERE close to matching it. So you’ll have to look for some diamonds in the ROUGH to find some games to add to your college football schedule this week. WOYSM will try to help you out with that.

Perhaps the BIGGEST game this week has the #15 Michigan Wolverines at the #3 Wisconsin BadgersAt least this games has two ranked teams playing against each other with one team’s playoff hopes in jeopardy should they lose. The Wolverines have won 4 of their last 5 games, they beat the Maryland Terrapins last week 35-10. The badgers just haven’t been shown any respect from the AP or Playoff committee, so its up to them to prove to both entities that they belong in the top 4. Wisconsin is one of three teams in the top 5 thats still undefeated even though they are criticized due to strength of schedule, they thumped the Iowa Hawkeyes last week 38-14, a week after the Hawkeyes handed it to the Ohio St. Buckeyes. Anything could happen in this game, expect the Badgers to pull it out, but don’t be surprised if the Wolverines get the upset.

Even though the #11 TCU Horned frogs are no longer in the playoff hunt they are still a very good team. The team announced that they are benching starting QB, Kenny Hill in favor of freshman QB, Shawn Robinson in an attempt to give the offense a boost. After starting the season 7-0 the Horned Frogs have now lost 2 of their last 3 games., including last week to the Oklahoma Sooners 38-20. They face a Texas Tech Red Raider team that has lost 4 of their last 5 games. They had lost 4-straight before beating the Baylor Bears last week 38-24. Even though the Horned frogs are favored in this game, the Red raiders are VERY capable of pulling off the upset. This is a game you want to add to you weekend schedule for sure it could be a dandy between these to inter-state teams.

The 5-5 Texas Longhorns travel to Morgantown, WV. to take on the 7-3 West Virginia Mountaineers. The Longhorns have improved this season, but they still have a WAYS to go to get back to their glory days. They have managed to win 2 of their last 3 games even though they were both to teams with losing records. They beat the Kansas Jayhawks in their last game 42-27.  West Virginia has been in the WOYSM College Top 25 and the AP poll more than once this season, but they managed to find ways to lose causing their stay to be a short one both times in the WOYSM poll however, they have won 4 of their last 5 games including last week, beating the Kansas St. Wildcats 28-23. The Longhorns are building for the future and as far as the present, they should have a hard time beating the Mountaineers, especially on their home field, but you never know they did manage to upset the Iowa St. Cyclones this season and the Cyclones had a couple of impressive upsets themselves. Make sure you add this game to your schedule as well.

The 5-5 Kansas St. Wildcats had high hopes this season, but things just haven’t panned out. It don’t get any easier this week when they travel to Stillwater, OK. to take on the #17 Oklahoma St. CowboysKansas St. has lost 4 of their last 6 games including last weeks game, losing to the West Virginia Mountaineers 28-23 in a close one. They need just one more win to become bowl eligible and looking at the last 2-games on their schedule (Oklahoma St. & Iowa St.) that won’t be an easy task. Oklahoma St. also had HIGH aspirations coming into this season, dreaming of making the playoffs, now thats all it has become (a dream). The Cowboys have won 5 of their last 6 games, they squeaked by the Iowa St. Cyclones last week 49-42, but their lone loss was to their state rival, the #5 Oklahoma Sooners two weeks ago. This should be an easy win for the Cowboys, but the way their defense has played, don’t be surprised if the Wildcats pull off the BIG upset.

In another BIG rivalry between to two teams that have a LONG history, the underachieving UCLA Bruins hope to get the upset against the USC Trojansbut thus far this season the Bruins haven’t managed to beat anyone this of substance. They have lost 3 of their last 5 games but did manage to get the win last week over the Arizona St. Sun Devils 44-37. The Trojans season has also managed to be somewhat of a disappointment since they had playoff hopes and have come up empty yet again. The 9-2 Trojans have won 4 of their last 5 games, they beat the Colorado Buffaloes last week 38-24. This is another game that could get out of hand if things go as expected for the Trojans, but this Sports Mind LOVES rivalry games because the unexpected can always happen, so don’t count the Bruins out just yet and make sure you check this game out too.

Other Intriguing games you might want to check out include the Virginia Cavaliers at the #2 Miami Hurricanes, the #14 UCF Knights at the Temple Owls, the SMU Mustangs at the #19 Memphis Tigers, the Kentucky Wildcats at the #8 Georgia Bulldogs, the Navy Midshipmen at the #10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the NC State Wolfpack at the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the California Golden Bears at the Stanford Cardinal. These are games you definitely want to try and add to your weekend schedule, as all have upset possibilities.

Check out the listing of this weekends games below and find the games that most intrigue YOU and enjoy your college football week as the season grows short.
