College Football Week 9.

by Larry Leek

What a GREAT lineup of games for this week. Starting with what would be a definite playoff game if it was that time of the season and the Buckeyes were ranked a bit higher. The #2 Penn St. Nittany Lions at the #8 Ohio St. Buckeyes. This game has HUGE playoff implications and should be a CLASSIC. If the Nittany Lions pull out the win and they get by the #19 Michigan St. Spartans next week you can pretty much punch their ticket as the #2 seed in the playoffs when you look at their remaining schedule.

Truth be known when you look at this years current top 25 teams, you see that 8-teams are still undefeated and there are 10-one loss teams, if that don’t tell you that college football needs an 8-team playoff format then you are hopeless and fail to see the BIG picture. Because if the Buckeyes should beat Penn St. Saturday, look at all of the possibilities

Another playoff contender as well as another great game, the #5 Georgia Bulldogs should get the win at the Florida Gators Saturday but an upset is definitely possible anytime these two get together. Georgia had a bye week last week. they spanked the 2-5 Missouri Tigers 53-28 two weeks ago. Florida is desperate to get back on the winning path after dropping their last two games to the LSU Tigers and last Saturday to #21 Texas A&M 19-17. The Gators did play both teams down to the wire losing to the Tigers by only 1-point so they are capable of giving the Bulldogs all they can handle, Be sure to add this game to your college football schedule it should be a dandy.

Two lower tier top 25 teams provide the makings of another very nice game to tune into. The #14 Oklahoma St. Cowboys and the #23 W. Virginia Mountaineers square off Saturday in Morgantown, WV. Earlier in the year the AP poll had the Cowboys in the top 10 until their playoff hopes were dashed by #9 TCU. Last week the Cowboys barely beat the Texas Longhorns 13-10They should face a MUCH stiffer competition against the Mountaineers who just re-entered the top 25 last week after they beat the Baylor Bears 38-36, even though you can’t count that win as impressive given the current state of Baylor football. The Mountaineers 2-losses were to #9 TCU and the #12 Virginia Tech Hokies. The most impressive win by the Mountaineers this season, if you consider it that was against Texas Tech.

Can the #9 TCU Horned Frogs survive the upset minded Iowa St. Cyclones? So far the Cyclones have upset the #10 Oklahoma Sooners and last week the unranked Texas Tech 31-13. The Cyclones 2-losses did come at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes  and Texas so the Horned Frogs should get the win. TCU’s biggest wins of the season so far are against #14 Oklahoma Stand #23 West Virginia. Last weekend the Horned Frogs routed the Kansas Jayhawks 43-0. This is still a MUST SEE game and one you will want to add it to your favorites list, because it will be a VERY tough road test for TCU.

Either this is going to be a GREAT game or a one sided game. The #15 NC State Wolfpack travel to South Bend, IN. to take on the #13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in what SHOULD be an exciting game to watch. If theirs a blowout to occur you can assume it will come at the hands of the Irish. The Wolfpack lost its opening game to #22 South Carolina but since they have reeled off 6-straight wins including their last game two weeks ago over the Pittsburgh Panthers 35-17. Their biggest wins came against the Florida St. Seminoles (Though the Seminoles season hasn’t been all that impressive) and the Louisville Cardinals both of which WERE in the top 25 at one time. The Irish’s lone loss came in week 2 when they lost by 1-pt. to #5 Georgia. Since then they have won their last 5-games beating the USC Trojans last week 49-14. Their other BIG win was against #19 Michigan St.

Other intriguing games with little if any implications that still should prove to be great games you may want to add to your schedule include, #19 Michigan St. at the Northwestern Wildcats, the UCLA Bruins at the #7 Washington Huskies, the Houston Cougars at #11 S. Florida Bulls, the Mississippi St. Bulldogs at #21 Texas A&M Aggies, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at #5 Clemson Tigers, the Texas Tech Red Raiders at #10 Oklahoma Sooners and a game I will definitely have on MY schedule, the Vanderbilt Commodores at MY #22 South Carolina Gamecocks. All of these games have the potential for an upset and all are definitely worth watching.

Check the FULL list of games below and find the games that intrigue YOU the most and add them to your weekend football schedule and ENJOY your football weekend.
