Larry’s Losers Week 8

by Larry Leek

Larry's Losers

It just DON’T seem to be getting any better. Last weeks dismal 7-8 record just goes to prove the parity the NFL has among the 32-teams at least that this ole Sports Minds story/excuse and I’m sticking to it. That brings the overall season record to a PITIFUL 57-48. With weeks like the last two I would have been better off going with the winners, Um, well never mind with the way things are going I guess I would have ended up making them losers….

I was happy to see MY Dallas Cowboys get a win, I just wish it had been against somebody, as they smashed the 0-7 San Francisco 49ers 40-10, YEE HA!! Maybe the win will get them back on the winning track :).

As far as upsets last week, which will further solidify my excuse for such a POOR record, the Chicago Bears had NO business beating the Carolina Panthers 17-3. Are the Bears better than we think OR are the Panthers slipping? Only the future will tell. Also whats up with the Denver Broncos? One would have to agree that they should have beat the LA Chargers last Sunday but alas the Chargers prevailed in convincing fashion 21-0 and thats all I got.

Lets get to this weeks (Hopefully) LOSERS….

The NFL has had some great Thursday night games this season unlike seasons past, but this week they get back to normal. One bright spot, the Dolphins are riding a 3-games win streak and tied for 2nd with Buffalo in the AFC East . Last week they beat the Jets 31-28 in a close one. Can they keep the streak alive against the Ravens? Baltimore owner Steve Bisciotti on the other hand is probably having some 2nd thoughts about the contract given to QB, Joe Flacco in May of 2013 after the Ravens won the SB. Flacco signed a 6 yr. $120.6 mil. dollar contract with $52 mil guaranteed. Thus far this season Flacco has 143 completions on 224 attempts for 1,189 Yds, for 5-TD’s and 8-Ints. The Ravens have lost 4 of their last 5-games after losing to the Vikings last week 24-16. So WHO will end up on top of this game? It’s a complete TOSS UP….

In a battle for what appears to be 2nd place in the division, The Cowboys offense, particularly the running game appears to have found itself after RB, Ezekiel Elliott had a breakout game right? well not so fast it was after all the 49ers PITIFUL defense. Elliott had 147 yds. on 26 carries with 2 TD’s, he also had 1-reception for 72 yds. and yet another TD. The Redskins were beaten for the 2nd time this season by the 1st place Eagles 34-24 on Monday night, it was their 2nd loss in 3-games. The Cowboys know they will have the services of Elliott for a least one more game before his hearing, scheduled for Monday Oct. 30th will be heard on his preliminary injunction against the NFL. If the courts deny the injunction, Elliot’s 6-game suspension will start next week. One things for sure the Redskins are banged up and the Cowboys are desperate to get above .500. This could still be a GREAT game to watch, It’s always been a classic where the favorite has lost many times.
Larry’s Loser: Washington

You would assume the Vikings will have little trouble with the winless Browns, since their defense is so dominate and your assumptions will probably be right EXCEPT, remember what this Sports Mind was saying earlier about how rampant parity rages in the NFL, SO anything IS possible. Minnesota won their 4th game out of their last 5 including their last 3 in a row. They beat the Ravens last Sunday 24-16. Cleveland hasn’t managed to do anything but lose, they lost their 7th straight against Tennessee last weekend 12-9 but at least they have been a BIG hit with Larry’s Losers since they have provided me with nearly a fifth of all my wins, So I say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it….                                          Larry’s Loser: Cleveland.

Last Thursday night the Raiders appeared to have FINALLY woke up. They managed to hand Kansas City their 2nd loss of the season in a 31-30 win. They had lost 4-straight before getting the much needed victory. The big question, Will they be able to make it two in a row against a good 4-2 Bills team thats 3-0 at home thus far this season? The Raiders are 1-2 on the road, with their only road win against Tennessee. Buffalo has won 3 of their last 4 including last weeks win at home against Tampa Bay 30-27. The temperature is supposed to dip into the 50’s and shouldn’t be a factor, so maybe the home crowd will be.

In another HUGE matchup, (Just kidding), It’s the hapless against the helpless. The 2-5 Colts are at the 2-4 Bengals in what promises to be a game mired in boredom-ness. All you can do here is hope and pray there’s no scoreless tie. Indianapolis is currently enjoying a 2-game losing streak, they lost last Sunday to the Jaguars 27-0 in embarrassing fashion. Cincinnati on the other hand has looked some better since starting the season 0-3, they had managed to win 2-straight before falling to Pittsburgh last week 29-14. This Sports Mind would have to give the Bengals an edge in this one, BUT anything can happen between two teams this BAD.

The Chargers started the season 0-4 and have since won their last 3-games against the Giants, Raiders and last week against the Broncos 21-0 with two of the three wins coming on the road. This week they travel to Foxboro, MA. to take on the defending champion Patriots who relived their Super Bowl win last Sunday when the beat the Falcons again 23-7. Even though New England has struggled this season, especially on defense. In the Patriots 1st four games this season their offense averaged just over 32 ppg. in their last 3 they have averaged 22 ppg. so a noticeable drop in production, while the Chargers have averaged 21.6 ppg in their last 3-wins, so over the last 3-games both offenses have been pretty close in comparison. SO the deciding factor in this game could be the defense.

The Chicago Bears out of their 3-wins this season have beaten the Steelers, Ravens and last week they beat the Panthers 17-3, actually all were pretty nice wins. They have won their last two games but the Saints have been on a roll winning their last 4-games, all over quality opponents, the Panthers, Dolphins, Lions and last week they beat the Packers 26-17 and even though they beat Green Bay without QB, Aaron Rogers a win is a win. Also even though rookie QB, Mitchell Trubisky has looked great at times a Drew Brees he is not, at least not yet anyway and this game could be decided by which QB has the best game. My bets on Brees.

If you would have asked me earlier in the year, who wins this game the choice would have been an easy one, now this Sports Minds not so sure. 7-weeks into the season only a 1/2 game separates these two teams. The Falcons were picked by some to return to the Super Bowl while the Jets were picked to finish last so one is living up to expectations while the other is not. After starting the season 3-0 the Falcons have lost their last 3 games including last week against the Patriots 23-7. The Jets lost their 1st two games of the season, won 3-straight and have now lost their last 2, losing last Sunday to Miami 31-28. So if both teams trends continue that would mean that both are due for a win this week and since that can’t happen something has to give.
Larry’s Loser: New York.

Talk about a mismatch. The 0-7, 49ers will try yet again to get that 1st win of the season, but if you look a little closer, they have not been that far off in most of their games. Except for their 1st game of the season and their last game, last weeks 40-10 loss to the Cowboys, the 49ers other 5-losses have all been by 3-pts. or less, so they have had some opportunities. 6-1 Philadelphia has looked almost unbeatable in their six wins with their only loss coming at the hands of the Chiefs in week 2. Last week they beat Washington 34-24. They have won their last 5-games and have a 29.8 ppg. average over those 5-games. Too bad the 49ers don’t play the Browns this year, so what would it take for the 49ers to get a win against the heavily favored Eagles? How about a miracle.

Panthers QB, Cam Newton did not take last weeks 17-3 loss to the Bears very well, as the post game press conference would support. It was their 2nd straight loss and they are hoping to avoid a 3rd to the underachieving Buccaneers who have lost 4 of their last 5 games including three straight, losing last Sunday to Buffalo 30-27. If my math is correct however, the Bucs. have a banged up secondary which should equal a field day for Cam. The Panthers also have a bit more at stake because they are trying to keep pace with the Saints for 1st place in the division, while the last place Bucs. appear to be a season or two away.

The 3-3 Texans are coming off their bye week looking to pick up where they left off in week 6, when they beat the winless Browns 33-17. Since week one Houston has been on a roller coaster ride winning/losing every other game and if you look deeper their wins have came against mediocre to bad teams in the Bengals, Titans and Browns while their losses were against the Jaguars, Patriots and Chiefs. While the Jags. are also not considered a contender, they are better than the 3-teams Houston has beaten. 4-2 Seattle appears to be in stride now after winning their last 3-games and 4 of their last 5. Last week they beat the Giants with little trouble 24-7, but if you look at their 4-wins perhaps the best one came against the Rams with the other three coming against teams with below .500 records. Bottom line, they won’t have an easy time of it beating Houston even though they are undefeated in their 2-home games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, despite troubles from within look to be recovered from their 2-losses earlier this season since both were to teams they should NOT have lost to (Bears & Jaguars). They have won 3 of their last 4, including last weekend against the Bengals 29-14. Steelers WR, Martavis Bryant stirred things up in the Steelers clubhouse this week by demanding more involvement in the offense or a trade, but since he has been quietened by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin who suspended Bryant for this weeks game and also stated that Bryant would not be traded. The last time Detroit played they lost their 2nd straight and 3 of their last 4 before last weeks bye. They lost to New Orleans 52-38 two weeks ago and it definitely won’t get any easier this weekend. The Steelers are 3-1 on the road while Detroit is 1-2 at home and this could be a huge factor in deciding this game.
Larry’s Loser: Detroit.

It appears that the wheels, ER horseshoes may have come completely off the Broncos after they lost their last 2-games and 3 of their last 4. Over the last 2-weeks they have lost to the 1-6 Giants and last week they were shutout by the 3-4 Chargers 21-0. But their is a bright side, 5-2 Kansas City after starting the season 5-0 have lost their last 2-games including last weeks lost to Oakland 31-30, so maybe theirs a chance that the Broncos will stampede over the Chiefs, but don’t get your hopes up to HIGH, Broncos fans because you can bet that the Chiefs will go all out to prevent a 3rd straight loss, they are 2-1 at home.
Larry’s Loser: Denver.
