College Football Week 7.

by Larry Leek

With week #7 upon us and so it’s time to get ready for yet another GREAT weekend of college football. There are some NICE games and WOYSM will take a look at some of the biggest games and what the end result could mean IF anything. So get you party favors together, warm up the recliner and GET READY for some FOOTBALL!!!!

How can you NOT start out with the game up in Ann Arbor, MI. ?  The #2 Penn St. Nittany Lions at the #8 Michigan Wolverines in a huge Big 10 matchup. The 5-1 Wolverines are trying to get back in the playoff hunt and what better way than to knock the nations #2 team out of it? The Wolverines offense will have to bring it this weekend if the are expecting to pull off the upset. But don’t think for a minute it’s not possible. Michigan’s only loss came at the hands of rival Michigan St. and last week they barely squeaked by the Indiana Hoosiers 27-20 in overtime and if the Wolverines offense is not up to the challenge the Nittany Lions could run away with this one. Penn St. has averaged 39.7 ppg. while the Wolverines have averaged 27.8 per game, almost 12 full pts. per game difference also another big difference the other way, Michigan has played 2-teams that are or have been ranked, while Penn St. hasn’t played any, SO the Wolverines will be a HUGE test for the virtually untested Nittany Lions. A MUST SEE GAME….

In a game that really DOES NOT have much implications other than the fact that the Texas Longhorns are playing for next year and also looking to attract recruits and the #16 Oklahoma St. Cowboys who started the season with high hopes for a playoff spot are now just trying to survive in the top 25. BUT it could prove to be a GREAT game mainly because there is the possibility of an upset here. The Longhorns have looked pretty good as of late and appear to be getting better as the season goes by.  They have beaten Kansas St. and Iowa St. and last week they almost upset the #11 Oklahoma Sooners before finally falling 29-24. They also played #13 USC to within a field goal, nearly upsetting the Trojans in a game where it took USC 2-OT’s to pull out the win. The Cowboys on the other hand have looked unbeatable at times and thus far their only kink came at the hands of TCU who handed them their only loss. but if you look closer, most of their wins have been against virtual no bodies like Tulsa, S. Alabama, Pittsburgh and Baylor. Their ONLY decent win came against Texas Tech. So don’t be surprised it the Longhorns take this one. This is YET another MUST SEE GAME….

Speaking of the Iowa St. Cyclones and the Texas Tech Red Raiders both of these teams have looked good at times this year. The Cyclones pulled off a nice upset a couple of weeks ago when they beat #11 Oklahoma and last week they blew out a BAD Kansas team 45-0. Now they get a chance to beat Texas Tech in what would be yet another upset for the Cyclones. The Red Raiders have had some pretty nice wins with their 2-losses coming at the hands of Oklahoma St. and W. Virginia last weekend 46-35. This game has ZERO implications but it promises to be a NICE game to watch between 2-decent teams

EVERYONE remembers what happened to #6 Clemson (Formally #2) last Friday night when they ran into a buzz saw against the 3-3 Syracuse Orange as Syracuse won the game 27-24. This weekend they focus their attention on the #3 Miami Hurricanes. The BIG question is, can the Orange pull off the BIG upset 2-weeks in a row? To be honest, My Sports Mind would have to say no even though the Hurricanes have shown signs of being vulnerable at times. Many felt they should have beat Florida St. by more than 4 pts. but they did manage to beat them on the road, but the difference could be the fact that Syracuse beat Clemson in front of their home crowd, now they must try to do it on the road which will be much tougher. Either way make sure to add this game to your schedule, It could wind up being a nail biter, especially for Hurricane fans.

The unranked Indiana Hoosiers will try to be the spoilers again at the #21 Michigan St. Spartans. Last weekend the Hoosiers nearly pulled off the upset against #8 Michigan at home before losing in overtime 27-20. They did manage to beat #25 Virginia in week 2 on the road when Virginia was unranked, but they were no match for #2 Penn St. or #9 Ohio St. on the road. The Spartans only loss thus far this season came against Notre Dame at home, since then they have won their last 3-games against Iowa, Michigan and last week at Minnesota 30-27. This game could wind up being a blow out, but you never know it definitely has the possible makings of a GREAT game and a possible upset which is why you don’t want to miss out….

The #13 USC Trojans at the #15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish should be a classic and one you will kick yourself if you miss. It’s one of those rare 7:30 PM starts for the Trojans, so you won’t have to stay up late to catch it. The Trojans have had some nice wins this season against teams like Stanford, California and last week at home against Utah in a close one 28-27. Their only loss this season so far came at the hands of #19 Washington St. The Irish will also prove to be a tough opponent for the Trojans, they handed #21 Michigan St. their only loss of the season and also played a great game against #5 Georgia even though they lost by only 1 pt. Last week they had an easy time with North Carolina getting the win 33-10. So here is yet another GREAT game, so DON’T miss it.

Check this weekends schedule below for other GREAT matchups and Enjoy your football weekend.
