Larry’s Losers, NFL Week 5

by Larry Leek

Larry's Losers

Starting out 4-6 last week wasn’t very good but of the 6-losses you could consider at least four of those games legitimate upsets. Finishing 6-0 in the final 6-games was a nice recovery though for a final weekly record of 10-6 and an overall season record of 40-22. It’s always a crap shoot in the NFL anyway, you just never know whats going to happen in any given week OR game.

This weeks games have some good teams, some decent teams and some winless teams playing each other, so it makes for some very interesting matchups indeed and it also makes it even MORE difficult picking the Losers. So let’s get to it, wish ME luck.

Thursday, October 5th

8:25 PM ET CBS

(2-2, 1-0 Away)

(2-1, 2-0 Home)

Raymond James Stadium
Tampa, FL
The #5 New England Patriots hit the road for a 2nd week in a row to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Thus far on the young season the Patriots are 1-2 on the road after losing to the Panthers last week 33-30. The Buc’s. are 2-1 coming off a win against the winless Giants 25-23. The big issue with the Patriots is their defense and the big question for Tampa Bay is, can the offense keep up with New England’s?
Larry’s Loser: Tampa bay.

Sunday, October 8th

4:25 PM ET FOX

(3-1, 0-1 Away)

(2-2, 1-1 Home)

AT&T Stadium
Arlington, TX
The #2 Green Bay Packers storm into Texas to play a #11 Dallas Cowboys team who is still trying to get back to playing like last season. The Cowboys have started the season 2-2 after being upset at home last week by the Rams 35-30. The main problem this season is the Cowboys defense obviously. Anytime you score 30 pts. you SHOULD win. The Packers haven’t looked great this season but they have looked good enough to be 3-1 thus far after defeating the Bears last week 35-14. Unless the Cowboys can open up the run game for RB, Ezekiel Elliott it could be another LONG day for Dallas.
Larry’s Loser: Green Bay.
1:00 PM ET CBS

(3-1, 1-1 Away)

(1-3, 0-2 Home)

Paul Brown Stadium
Cincinnati, OH
Last Sunday the Buffalo Bills looked very impressive on both sides of the ball in their win over the Falcons 23-17. To see the Bills on top of the AFC East is really strange, but they have earned it at 3-1. The 1-3 Cincinnati Bengals have looked anything BUT impressive getting their first win of the season last Sunday against the hapless Browns 31-7 is certainly nothing to brag about, even though it appears their offense may finally have came to life. The BIG question concerning this game will be, IF the Bengals offense will be able to do ANYTHING against the Bills (suddenly) great looking defense?
Larry’s Loser: Cincinnati.
1:00 PM ET FOX

(2-2, 0-2 Away)

(0-4, 0-2 Home)

FirstEnergy Stadium
Cleveland, OH
The New York Jets defense appears to have come to life. After starting the season 0-2, the Jets have won their last 2-games to even up at .500 including a win last week on the road, beating the Jaguars 23-20. The Jets are 0-2 at home this season, but they play an 0-4  Cleveland Browns team that hasn’t been able to win anywhere. They were blown out at home last week by the Bengals 31-7 and IF the Jest defense can keep up the pressure the anemic Browns offense could be in for YET another dry, drought ridden day.
Larry’s Loser: Cleveland.
1:00 PM ET FOX

(3-1, 2-0 Away)

(3-1, 1-1 Home)

Ford Field
Detroit, MI
The #7 Carolina Panthers have been up and down thus far this season even though they are 3-1, after being upset by the Saints in week 3, they bounced back with a huge home win over the Patriots 33-30. They will get another tough test on the road this Sunday from the #8 Detroit Lions who are also 3-1, coming off a nice win last Sunday at Minnesota 14-7. This will be one of the BIG games to watch and should prove to be a GOOD one. This game is definitely a Pick Em and could go either way, BUT someone’s gotta lose.
Larry’s Loser: Carolina.
1:00 PM ET FOX

(0-4, 0-2 Away)

(1-3, 1-1 Home)

Lucas Oil Stadium
Indianapolis, IN
The 0-4 San Francisco 49ers may get one of their best shots at a win Sunday when they travel to Indy to play the Indianapolis Colts. Last Sunday the 49ers were close to winning one before falling to the Cardinals 18-15 while the Colts had a major win on the road against the Seahawks blowing them out 46-18. You GOT to believe if they can beat up on Seattle in their own venue as LOUD as it can be there, they should have NO issues beating the 49ers at home.
Larry’s Loser: San Francisco.
1:00 PM ET CBS

(2-2, 1-1 Away)

(1-2, 0-1 Home)

Hard Rock Stadium
Miami, FL
The 1-2 Miami Dolphins look to be heading back to oblivion after making the post season last year, it’s all but a long shot to make a return appearance in 2017. The Dolphins were shut out last week at home by the Saints 20-0. The Tennessee Titans are expected to compete for the AFC South title this season, however they suffered a BIG set back losing a big divisional game last Sunday to the Texans, getting blown out in the process 57-14. If QB, Marcus Mariota’s hamstring has healed enough for him to play and be effective the Titans should win this game. If he is unable to play its a pick em game.
Larry’s Loser: Miami.
1:00 PM ET CBS

(0-4, 0-1 Away)

(0-4, 0-1 Home)

MetLife Stadium
East Rutherford, NJ
in a game between two winless teams someone at least SHOULD come out of this game with a win. The 0-4 LA Chargers haven’t gave their new town much to celebrate, while their old town (St. Louis) might be glad now, that they left. They were beaten last Sunday at home by the Eagles 26-24. The NY Giants have shocked everyone by starting the season 0-4 after dropping yet another last Sunday to the Buccaneers 25-23, but with the talent this teams has you figure they have to get a win sometime soon. It could be sooner than you think.
Larry’s Loser: Los Angeles.
1:00 PM ET FOX

(2-2, 1-1 Away)

(3-1, 1-0 Home)

Lincoln Financial Field
Philadelphia, PA
The 2-2 Arizona Cardinals seem to have slipped a bit over the last couple seasons. Even though they still have a formidable defense, their offense is showing signs of OLD age. They barely managed a win last Sunday against the 49ers 18-15 and if they hope to beat the #10 Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday who beat the Chargers last week 26-24, the Cards offense had best STEP UP their game. They haven’t score more than 18 pts. in their last 3-games while the Eagles haven’t scored less than 20 in any of their games.
Larry’s Loser: Arizona.
1:00 PM ET CBS

(2-2, 1-1 Away)

(3-1, 1-0 Home)

Heinz Field
Pittsburgh, PA
The Jacksonville Jaguars looked like they were destined for the post season a couple weeks ago after going 2-1 and making it into the top 12 teams. After losing to the Jets last Sunday 23-20 who knows what to expect? The #3 Pittsburgh Steelers were considered SB favorites at the start of the season and even though they are 3-1, the one loss was to the Bears. They managed to get the win last Sunday over the Ravens 26-9 on the road, but alas the Steelers will be back home this week and we know what that means.
Larry’s Loser: Jacksonville.
4:05 PM ET CBS

(2-2, 1-1 Away)

(2-2, 1-0 Home)

Oakland Coliseum
Oakland, CA
This game Pitts two 2-2 teams trying to keep their helmets above .500 and the bottom line, unless they tie only one will. The Baltimore Ravens offense has only managed 16 total pts. in their last two games, both of which were losses. They lost last Sunday to the Steelers 26-9. The #6 Oakland Raiders another team thought to be SB contender early on, after starting the season 2-0, like the Ravens have now lost their last two games. Their offense has managed only 10 ppg. the last two games losing to the Broncos last Sunday 16-10. So both teams are very similar in many ways except one, after Sunday one will be 3-2 and the other 2-3.
Larry’s Loser: Baltimore.
4:05 PM ET CBS

(2-2, 0-2 Away)

(3-1, 1-1 Home)

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
Los Angeles, CA
Boy how quickly things can change sometimes. The once MIGHTY Seattle Seahawks have been on a roller coaster ride since the season began by winning in weeks 1 and 3 while losing in weeks 2 and last week, getting blown out by the Colts 46-18, while the Los Angeles Rams have made great strides since last season or so it appears. They upset the Cowboys on the road last Sunday 35-30. If the Hawks can’t beat the Colts at home how are they supposed to beat the Rams on the road?
Larry’s Loser: Seattle.
8:30 PM ET NBC

(4-0, 2-0 Away)

(2-2, 1-1 Home)

NRG Stadium
Houston, TX
If the season ended today the Kansas City Chiefs you have to believe would be in the SB. but it don’t and they aren’t. They will get a stiff test this Sunday when they play at the Houston TexansThe Chiefs beat up on the Redskins Monday night 29-20 to remain the only unbeaten team in the NFL. The Texans looked equally impressive after destroying the Titans 57-14 with rookie QB, Deshaun Watson having a huge game. This will be a great game to watch with plenty of fireworks, the only question, who will come out on top?
Larry’s Loser: Houston.

Monday, October 9th

(2-2, 0-1 Away)

(1-3, 1-1 Home)

Soldier Field
Chicago, IL
The Minnesota Vikings looked impressive early on this season but have lacked consistency in winning by dropping every other game. They were beaten at home last week by the Lions 14-7 and have scored only 16 combined pts. in both losses. The Chicago Bears shocked everyone two weeks ago by upsetting the Steelers, however they returned to their old selves last Sunday by losing to the Packers 35-14. The Bears announced earlier this week that rookie QB, Mitchell Trubisky will get the start against the Vikes, BUT will it provide the spark to win the game?
Larry’s Loser: Chicago.
