Week 3 Equals September Slump

by Larry Leek

With one of the best match ups of the college football weekend to come being postponed, due to hurricane Irma, (#5 Miami Hurricanes At #10 Florida State Seminoles), it kinda leaves college football fan nation with only bits and pieces of anything resembling weeks 1 and 2. That leaves 2 games between teams Ranked in the WOYSM College Top 25 set for the weekend.

There’s a college football phenomenon that occurs every year at this time, Welcome to the Mid September slump . Perhaps it’s to give fans a break from the 1st two weeks of excitement (I mean it is a NEW season, we don’t want anyone stressing TOO early) OR perhaps it’s because the top teams in the country just want to flex that muscle one more time against a feather weight for rank positioning before conference play begins. This week with the only other game pitting top 25 teams coming from the LOWER tier of the ranks perhaps we can find a few diamonds in the rough for college fans to enjoy, SOMEWHERE….

Starting with the lower tier game, the #20 Tennessee Volunteers At #18 Florida Gators, about the only thing you can say about this game is the loser drops out. The Gators are trying to avoid an 0-2 start and eminent disaster while the Volunteers still have something to prove as far as being a legit SEC contender, one loss and it’s back to square one. Maybe some fans can find excitement in that, particularly Gator and Vol. fans.

Perhaps a gem of a game in it’s own right, being it’s the ONLY other game against top 25 teams will prove to be between the #3 Clemson Tigers at #12 Louisville Cardinals. It’s uncertain how the match up will fare between the Tigers offense Vs Louisville’s defense BUT it should be a dandy of a game between Cardinal QB, Lamar Jackson and Clemson’s defense, which is where the game will probably be decided. The Tigers defense ranks 1st among Div. 1 schools in QB sacks and they had 11 against Auburn last Saturday, they also sacked Jackson 5-times in last years game so if Louisville is forced to rely on Jackson’s running they could be in for a LONG day..

As far as diamonds in the rough, #8 LSU Tigers At Mississippi St. Bulldogs could prove to be a good game to watch. Has the Ed Orgeron era changed that much yet from the Les Miles era? Inquiring minds want to know. The Bulldogs are the top team knocking at the WOYSM Top 25 door in the others receiving dept. and the Tigers are trying to prove they are still a force. Does anyone smell an upset?

Does anyone want to see how much new Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman has improved the Longhorns in just three weeks? You can get your chance this week when they travel to play at the #7 USC Trojans. Everyone (Including WOYSM) had the Longhorns in their Top 25 preseason poll, but that was short lived after Texas was BLOWN out by the Maryland Terrapins 51-41 at home. MAYBE we’ll see some more improvement from the Longhorns, but expect a replay from week 1.

This Is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

Even though the games are just a TAD bit of a let down from the previous 2-weeks, I know this Ole Sports Mind has one question I’m wanting to have answered. Can MY South Carolina Gamecocks snap a 3-game losing streak to the Kentucky Wildcats? The good news is they will be at home in Columbia, SC with the chance to snap it. GO Gamecocks!!!! I’m hoping this will be My Sports Minds diamond in the rough.

Of the other games this weekend, of course, Louisville and Clemson should prove to be the best match up, but one game not mentioned could prove interesting.

The #11 Wisconsin Badgers At Brigham Young Cougars could be an upset waiting to happen. Even though the Badgers grilled Utah St. 59-10 and defeated a Lane Kiffin coached Florida Atlantic team 31-14, they struggled a bit early against a decent at best FAU, if they struggle against BYU. My Sports Mind can see it getting ugly. The Badgers should win, but don’t be surprised if it goes the other direction.
