WOYSM College Top 25
Just when things were nice and HOT as far as the the top four teams are concerned one of them has to cool down. The former 2nd ranked #9 Ohio St. Buckeyes appear to have taken an early exit from this years college playoff run, losing to #23 Penn St. on Saturday 24-21.
#4 Washington had no problem with the Buckeyes loss, especially since it allowed them to slide right into the final playoff slot. Now if they can manage to just hold on to it. The Huskies destroyed Oregon St. 41-7 Saturday to remain unbeaten.
#1 Alabama and #8 Texas A&M were involved in the biggest matchup on Saturday. The Aggies managed to give the Tide all they could handle for the first two quarters, but Alabama took control and the win 33-14 in the end when it counted MOST.
#8 Nebraska moved up two slots even though they squeaked out a win over unranked Purdue on saturday 27-14. The Huskers were actually trailing in the game early on 14-13. The BIG question is could Nebraska have won the game had former LSU head coach Les Miles been running the Boilermaker show?
So many teams fell from the WOYSM Top 25 this week (6) more than any other week this season, it almost caused the flush button to get stuck. Newcomers to the poll and some not so new this week are #20 Oklahoma, #21 Navy, #22 Troy, #23 Penn St. #24 Oklahoma St. & #25 Toledo all made it into the top 25 this week, but alas we ALL know what kind of revolving door the lower tier of the poll always is.
This Is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:
Surprise, Surprise!! We were all so looking forward to the matchup between the Buckeyes and #2 Michigan and too be honest, from what this Sports Mind witnessed on Saturday between Ohio St. and the Nittany Lions, I’m not to sure now that the Buckeyes can give the Wolverines a good game. Lets just hope they can keep from losing any more games before the two teams meet five weeks from now.
The Huskies have been along for the ride all season, slowly inching to the top of the polls and now into the driver’s seat for the final playoff spot. Even though this Sports Mind believes another could possibly open up before the season’s end, it remains to be seen. But unless that happens you could already be looking at this years college football final four.
Lets take a look at this weeks College Football Fan Highs and Lows:
All of this week’s Highest of Highs come from the smaller voices in college football and also the fans of teams who saw their teams fall out of the polls earlier this year only to return OR from fans who haven’t saw their team in the polls for some time.
Teams that rarely make the poll like Western Michigan, Troy and Toledo, teams that have been in the polls this year like Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. and Navy as well as Toledo and then there’s Penn St. who has not been in any polls lately, well let’s see not since Joe Paterno resigned. All of their fans have to be riding nice Highs this week as the holiday season begins to roll in and for them My Sports Mind is certain they must feel quite toasty about now.
Cornhusker fans have to be still buzzing with a High somewhat since their team is outside knocking on the playoff door because when the season began this Sports Mind is positive none of them thought they would make it this High…. Stay tuned Husker fans, Nebraska had all they could handle from the Boilermakers on Saturday and it looks like that buzz is just about to come to an end.
After Being SO High and after coming SO Close, perhaps NO teams fans could be Lower right now than Houston Cougar fans. Just when it looked like they were destined for a spot in the college playoffs, they fall completely out of the picture. Not just the playoff picture but the entire Poll picture. Just when head coach Tom Harmon’s name was becoming a household name it has cooled off that quick at least every where but the University of Houston. Did anyone say coaching Hotseat? Oh ok too early for that right?
Aggie fans have to be feeling somewhat Low after actually leading the Crimson Tide BRIEFLY during Saturday’s game. Their team just didn’t have enough to outlast Alabama at crunch time when the men and boys become seperated. Oh well don’t feel too bad Aggies, there’s always one of those OTHER bowls….
Even though My South Carolina Gamecocks looked almost decent in their third win of the season defeating U. Mass and even though the debut of freshman QB, Jake Bentley looked promising, the win was against the 1-7 Minutemen and after jumping out to a 31-14 lead in the first half they barely managed to hang on in the end 34-28. I hear the talk of a bowl bid on different radio talk shows around the state, however with the Gamecocks remaining schedule My Sports Mind just DON’T see it. Perhaps the talk should be about Asst. coach Bobby Bentley (Hint, Hint) 😉
