WOYSM College Football Top 25

by Larry Leek

Week one was supposed to have the biggest line up of games between ranked teams for the first week of the season in the history of college football.  NOT so sure about that but now that week one is in the books did the results clear anything up?

Well of course not…. If that were possible we probably could get by with a one game season right? Wrong! Not hardly. With all the hype and build up leading to the start of the new season every year, one game regardless of the outcome just wouldn’t be enough to calm the savage football beast that dwells in all fans.

In fact many fans are left wanting more after 12 or more games each year and perhaps thats one of the reasons that Football is BY FAR the most popular sport in America. Since the season is so short compared to the other two major sports and unlike both of those it always leaves you wanting more, which of course any business will tell you is a GOOD thing 😉 .

So with one week out of the way and for the moment at least we can say the season still has a long way to go, with that said it’s time for this years 1st regular season edition of the WOYSM College Football Top 25.

As expected most teams started out slow and shortly afterwards some of them looked like they had been playing all Summer. After trailing 3-0 early to the USC Trojans, the #1 Ranked Alabama Crimson Tide  didn’t take long to pick back up where they left off and looked completely worthy of their top ranking by destroying the Trojans 52 to 6.

As much as the Tide looked like their offseason was a mere walk in the park, other teams not so much especially when you consider that two of the WOYSM Preseason Top 5 teams both lost and the #2 Clemson Tigers squeaked by an unranked  Auburn Tigers team 19-13.

Granted it was a road game for Clemson in a tough environment but even though Auburn is a traditionally great team, they fell off quite a bit last season with a 7-6-0 record and a defense that allowed 338 Pts/26.0 ppg. and was ranked 55th overall out of 128 teams.

Their wasn’t expected to be much improvement this season which is why they were not in the rankings to begin the season. So after Sat. nights game its hard to tell if Clemson has gotten worse since the 2015 season or if the other Tigers have improved OR it could be that it was week one?

Houston v Oklahoma

The #20 LSU Tigers and #21 Oklahoma Sooners didn’t fare so well. Both teams dropped their openers at home, LSU fell to (then) unranked #19 Wisconsin Badgers 16 to 14 while the Sooners lost to the #18 Houston Cougars 33 to 23, the Cougars were also previously unranked.

This Is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

WELL the wait is finally over. I hope after a loooong off season and hot Summer of lazing around the pool, beach or whatever you did to kill the time that all of you football fans out there didn’t let that screaming voice of yours get too out of shape. I guess you found on Saturday if that was the case hah….

So after waiting all this time for the season to begin did your favorite college football team leave you on a High or Low this past weekend? Here are some of My Sports Minds takes from this week’s games that I call The WOYSM College Football Fan Highs and Lows Of The Week, Whew!

The season finally started.

Hurricane And Bulldog fans have reason to be optimistic.

Kirby Smart, Georgia

Georgia Head Coach, Kirby Smart

This old Sports Mind saw some very nice coaching debuts Saturday from new #16 Miami Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt and also the new head coach at Richt’s former school, new #14 Georgia Bulldogs  head coach, Kirby Smart both celebrated wins.

Miami took the Bite, Fangs and Skin from the Rattlers of Florida A&M in a 70 to 3 win, while the Bulldogs defeated a more formidable opponent beating the #25 North Carolina Tar Heels 30 to 24.

Houston had a HUGE season opening win over then #4 Oklahoma. After a nice season last year the Cougars are off to a great start.

Wolverine fans are relevant again, it looks like coach Jim Harbaugh’s Satellite camps have paid off PRIMEtime as the #4 Michigan Wolverines won their opener, drubbing the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors  63-3.

The Summers over.

My South Carolina Gamecocks.                                                                                     I guess I shouldn’t look at it as a Low, Because on a High the Gamecocks did get the win, On another High it was on the road, On yet another High they pulled it out LATE, (kinda like UT. but not as LATE or quite as bad an opponent). But on a Low they barely won, On another Low it was after trailing the entire game and yes the final Low that put the final nail in the cleat and penalized pulling the game out late over to the Low side, it was the Vanderbilt Commodores.  Nuff Said

LSU, UT and Sooner fans have BIG reason for concern.

Last season after rumors spread that LSU head coach Les Miles might lose his job after the team started out strong, ranked as high as #1 in some polls before fizzling out finishing with an 8-3 regular season record, losing 3 of their last 4 games all of which were to SEC west teams.

After the team closed the season with a win over Texas A&M and a bowl win over Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl the University’s officials decided at the last minute to stay Mile’s execution.

Starting out this season again in the top 5 with a home loss to a team unranked at the time is NO WAY to back the University’s decision. Les had better right the ship in a hurry or it could get ugly in Baton Rouge.

Tennessee Vs App. St.

While we are on that subject, let’s stay in the SEC for this note.                                               Was that a LOUD THUMP I heard up in Knoxville, TN Saturday?

After hearing all thru the off season how the #24 Tennessee Volunteers were going to at the very least, win the SEC East this season and how head coach Butch Jones was finally going to have a breakout season this year wreaking the rewards of a few highly ranked recruiting classes. Saturday this Sports Mind was almost convinced that Appalachian St. was going to get the HUGE (well not so huge) upset win but the Vols pulled it out LATE with a 20-13 OT win and it don’t get much later than that.

Of course this is just week #1 BUT coach Jones and the Vols had better show DRAMATIC improvement after Saturday for the rest of the season or My Sports Mind believes his time will have run out.

Should Clemson fans worry?                                                                                                                After Auburn’s defense slipped all the way to 55th last season, it was obvious that it was going to take a lot of work to get the team back into SEC shape. Even though it’s too early to tell if Auburn’s defense has improved that much from last year, they did put up a good showing against the #2 ranked Tigers yesterday.

My Sports Mind does not believe that Auburn has made a complete 360 from last year and it’s apparent that most do not believe so as well since no one had them in their preseason poll. From what this Sports Mind saw there is a reason for Clemson fans to be a little concerned but it is still very early, they got the win and it could be worse, ask LSU and Oklahoma fans.

Let’s GO to the POLL!

So Whats On Your Sports Mind about this subject?
