Peyton The Bronco

Peyton Manning will officially hang up his cleats Monday, calling it quits after 18 years in the NFL (1998-2016). He leaves the game with the most passing TD’s, a record 5-MVP’s, Two Super Bowl titles, Tied with Brett Farvre for most games played and the list goes on and on. Manning will hold a press conference Monday and the announcement will be covered by ESPN. Peyton will step down at the age of 39 and leaves the game as a Champion, The Bronco’s defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, 24-10 and there’s NO better way to ride off into the sunset than to ride off on top.

Peyton came into the NFL as a #1 draft pick, drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, he played for the Colts for 14 seasons, Before the Colts made incumbent QB, Andrew Luck their #1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft deciding it was time to move on, allowing Manning to become a free agent, where he then signed with the Denver Broncos and played with the team for 4-years, taking them to the Super Bowl twice in 2014 & 2016, losing one to the Seattle Seahawks before defeating Carolina in Super bowl 50.

Peyton As A Colt

Peyton attended the University of Tennessee during his college career after being considered the top QB in the state of Louisiana, coming from Isidore Newman HS in New Orleans. He played all of his eligible four years at Tennessee returning for his senior season when many thought he would enter the draft early as a Junior.

Manning is well known for his game preparation, his ingenious as an audible QB and also as a class player and great teammate.

Most annalist have him in the top 5 QB’s of all time. But things weren’t always as great for manning, his rookie season manning passed for 3,739 Yds. with 26 TD’s but also had 28 Ints. and though the Bronco’s won the Super Bowl it definitely wasn’t a typical Peyton Manning type season as he threw for 2,249 yds with just 9-TD’s and 17-Ints. and missed six games because of numerous health reasons before returning to the field in week 17 and leading the Broncos to the Super Bowl.

Manning also struggled still in Super Bowl 50, he was 13-23 for 141 Yds. 0-Td’s and 1-Int. Many believe if not for the Bronco’s top rated defense and the Panthers poor performance that the Bronco’s might not have won the game, but they did, Manning got his 2nd ring which possibly made it easier for him to decide to hang it up.

This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

Peyton Manning was such a class act thru out his career in the NFL there’s few players that have played that has meant so much to the game as Manning has. so My Sports Mind says kudos to Manning for going out as a Champion.

Here is a list of the current NFL records held by Manning as he leaves the game:

  • NFL career passing touchdown record: 539
  • Most passing yards, career: 71,940
  • Single season touchdown record (2013): 55
  • Most passing yards, season (2013): 5,477
  • Most wins (including playoffs): 200
  • Most games throwing for 300+ yards: 93
  • Most passing touchdowns in a single game (tied, 2013): 7
  • Most games with a passing rating higher than 105: 97
  • Most games with a perfect passer rating of 158.3: 5
  • Most seasons with 350+ completions: 10
  • Most games completing 80-percent passing: 19
  • Most game-winning drives: 56
  • Most comeback wins: 45
  • Highest completion percentage in a postseason game with 450+ yards (2005): 81.8
  • Highest yards-per-game, season (2013): 342.31
  • Most games with 4+ touchdown passes: 25
  • Most seasons passing for 4,000+ yards: 14
  • Most consecutive seasons with 25+ touchdowns: 13
  • One of two quarterbacks to ever beat all 32 teams (along with Brett Favre)
  • First quarterback to beat 31 franchises: 2007
  • Most Associated Press NFL MVP awards: 5 (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013)

My Sports Mind tells me that’s quite an accomplishment. the only and obvious possibility is that New England QB, Tom Brady will likely shatter many of Peyton’s achievements  by the time he decides to retire.

Peyton has meant so much to the game that on Sunday March 6th, ESPN held a Peyton Manning retirement special, something no other QB before him or any other player for that matter ever had done for them.

He also has been very successful in his personal endevors, opening up Pappa Johns Pizza franchises, being cast in MANY commercials and receiving many sponsor endorsements thru out his career, so even though he leaves the game, for him money will never be an issue.

My Sports Mind would also have to agree that Manning is one of the top 5 QB’s to have played the game, I would rank him 4th behind Joe Montana, Tom Brady and John Elway.  He was excellent at  calling audibles, probably the best ever and was a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Another remarkable achievement for the Manning family is the face that for nearly 40 years there’s been a Manning playing QB in the NFL.

Archie Manning (Peyton’s dad) played in the NFL for 13 yrs. from 1971 thru 1984, Peyton from 1998 thru 2016 and he leave’s his brother Eli as the  NY Giants  starting QB since 2004-current, (43 years of experience total between the 3)

My Sports Mind can only say congratulations to Peyton for a brilliant career, the game and what you have meant to it will miss surely you. Too bad you wasn’t a Cowboy and lastly I’d like one LARGE Pepperoni to go please.

So Whats On Your Sports Mind about this subject?
