Gamecocks Off To Best Start In 45 Years
The South Carolina Gamecocks are making some noise early in this young college basketball season and the last time they made it last this long consecutively was in 1970. The Gamecocks (9-0, 0-0 SEC) are not only playing better than they have in a number of years, they are off to their BEST start in 45 years.
Former Kansas St. Coach and current Gamecocks Head Coach, Frank Martin now in his 3rd season at the helm of the men’s basketball team has done a very nice job thus far of rebuilding the program in Columbia, SC.
So far this season their average margin of victory over the nine game stretch is 16.44 ppg. while beating teams like DePaul, Hofstra, Tulsa and last night drubbing Drexel 79-54.
The Gamecocks have two players on the team whose fathers also played basketball at South Carolina, Guard PJ Dozier’s (Freshman) dad Perry & also his uncle and Perry’s twin brother Terry both played together at South Carolina, while Guard Justin McKie’s father BJ McKie also played for the Gamecocks under former Head Coach. Eddie Fogler.
Thus far PJ has been the better of the two. PJ has averaged 8.1 ppg with 3.9 rpg and 2.3 apg, While Justin has an average of 1.9 ppg, 1.0 rpg and 1.3 apg.
The Gamecocks leading scorer is Lithuanian Forward, Mindaugas Kacinas who has looked very good and has been averaging 13.3 ppg with 6.3 rpg and 1.0 apg and 2nd on the Gamecocks list is fellow Lithuanian Forward, Laimonas Chatkevicius who is an averaging 13 ppg. with 4.3 rpg. and 08 apg.
This Is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:
It been a LONG time coming and quite a number of coach’s (8 to be exact) between The two Franks, Legend Gamecocks Coach Frank McGuire, (who was the last coach to guide South Carolina to a 9-0 record) and Martin.
South Carolina hired Martin because they wanted a coach that could re-energize the program and Coach Martin has done JUST that. He’s done an excellent job of bringing in top recruits and has already received the verbal on 4 Star 6-10 Center, Sedee Keita from Greenville, SC for next season.
My Sports Mind can see a very bright future ahead indeed for this young team and it’s fiery coach. Even though the Gamecocks have not entered conference play, they currently are atop the conference with the best record including Kentucky (9-1, 0-0 SEC) by 1/2 game.
From what My Sports Mind has seen, I feel that the Gamecocks could be ready to take the next step and have a very good chance to win the SEC East and possibly the SEC this season. I think their speed will match up perfectly with Kentucky and it’s very obvious when you watch this team play that they are extremely disciplined and their conditioning is totally OFF the chain which means they will be fresh late when it counts the MOST.
Before the Gamecocks can take that next step however, for them to break the record and achieve their best start in 80 years (1933,34 season), they will have to defeat their arch rival the Clemson Tigers (7-3, 0-0 ACC) Friday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. I think they will and as far as My Sports Mind is concerned, WHO BETTER?
