It’s Conference Title Day
All over College Football Nation fans are preparing for the feast of the season and what has ultimately become the deciding factor as to which teams will make the four team playoff and could also provide a MAJOR shakeup in the top 4 playoff teams should things NOT go according to plan.
In four of the major conferences in the country the SEC, ACC, Pac 12 and Big Ten, also in the American Athletic, big conference championship games are scheduled today with HUGE possibilities for some of the winners but not all.
Over in the ACC It’s #2 Clemson (12-0, 8-0 ACC) against #12 N. Carolina (11-1, 8-0 ACC) going after the ACC crown in perhaps the most intriguing game of the five. The Tigers have struggled as of late against their last three opponents, all of which have losing records and Clemson’s avg. margin of victory against the three teams (Syracuse, Wake Forest & South Carolina) was only 11.6 ppg. meanwhile the Tar Heels have gotten stronger over the season after suffering their only loss in week #1 to a BAD South Carolina team, they have rebounded very well behind Senior QB, Marquise Williams. Since week #1, The Tar Heels have basically manhandled every opponent they have played and their avg. margin of victory since week #1 is a a very nice 22.73 ppg. Over the last three weeks against Miami, Virginia Tech & NC State their Avg. is 17.33 ppg.
So the game looks to be a very interesting matchup indeed.
Over in the SEC its #1 Alabama (11-1, 7-1 SEC) Vs #15 Florida (10-2, 7-1 SEC) vying for the SEC title. The Crimson Tides defense should be up to the task today and The Gators could pull off what would be a major upset and should that happen you can be sure that the SEC would be left out of the playoffs all together because the Gators are too far out to have any chance for a playoff spot. Since losing to Ole Miss. in week #3, The Crimson Tide have reeled off nine consecutive wins. Most impressive was their victory over then undefeated LSU 30-16 while shutting down then Heisman hopeful RB, Leonard Fournette. The Gators have not looked overly impressive and the real killer to their season was the loss last week to #11 Florida St. 27-2.
The Big Ten’s conference championship game has huge implications between #3 Michigan St (11-1, 7-1 Big Ten) and #4 Iowa (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten) where the winner will definitely be part of the playoff festivities and the loser goes home to find out which bowl they will appear in. The Spartans have won some big games conference wise this season beating #6 Ohio St. (11-1, 7-1 Big Ten)and #16 Michigan (9-3, 6-2 Big Ten) and did not have to play Big Ten Foe Iowa until today’s conference title game.\
Over in the Pac 12 it’s #7 Stanford (10-2, 8-1 Pac 12) Vs unranked USC (8-4, 6-3 Pac 12) in a rematch from earlier this season when the Cardinal defeated the Trojans in week #3, 41-31. Stanford has a slim chance to make the final field of four teams in the playoffs but they will need help from perhaps N. Carolina and/or Florida.
The American Athletic Conference will not be providing a team in the playoffs this year but it’s still going to be a great game today between #20 Houston (11-1, 7-1 American) and unranked Temple (10-2, 7-1 American). in another game between two conference foes facing off against each other for the first time this season. The Cougars only loss of the season came two weeks ago against conference member, unranked Connecticut.
This Is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:
The Conference Championships are finally here & BOY what huge effects two of them will have on the final four playoff teams.
Alabama or Clemson or both could be sent home packing today should one or both lose in their respective conference championship games.
My Sports Mind can see the Crimson Tide have an easy time w/ the Gators BUT you never know once teams have came this far given their accomplishments. If I was to bet on who has the best chance to upset one of the top four teams I would have to say it’s the N. Carolina Tar Heels. against Clemson. Given the obvious struggles that the Tigers have had as of recent, especially against MY South Carolina Gamecocks, you cannot help but wonder just how good this Clemson team really is even thou they ARE 12-0.
The same has to be asked In My Sports Mind about Iowa the only other unbeaten team. Also not really proving that they deserve to be in the top 4 other than the fact that they are unbeaten, who have they really played?
Over in the American Athletic Conference, the big question has already been answered and that’s where will Houston head coach Mark Herman be coaching next season? The Cougars gave Herman a 5 yr. contract extension, so other than that it’s NO playoff spot for the AAC, at least for this season. But with great coach’s like Herman returning to the Cougars, maybe a playoff spot could be a possibility next season.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict the outcome of today’s Conference title games.
North Carolina 27 Clemson 24
Alabama 31 Florida 17
Michigan St. 40 Iowa 21
Stanford 31 USC 21
Houston 45 Temple 38
