WOYSM College Top 25 (Week 12)

by Larry Leek

After 11 weeks a new team rules the land. The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide  (10-1, 6-1 SEC) moved into the top spot for the first time this season after #7 Ohio St’s. (10-1, 6-1 (Big Ten) loss to #4 Michigan St.  (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten) 17-14, who may have played their way back into the four team playoff or have they?

With all thats happened the last four weeks its really impossible to predict who will hold the top four slots in any of the polls and most importantly the committee’s top 4 teams.

Most of the big games are out of the way as far as the regular season schedule, but lets not forget the conference championships and the fact that their outcome can change EVERYTHING.  You have to remember that most all of if not all of the teams in the WOYSM College Top 25 will be involved in the conference championships, so the BEST is actually yet to come.

Currently the top 4 teams in our poll may not reflect the committees top 4 selections but we shouldn’t be too far off.

After the Crimson Tide are, #2 Clemson (11-0, 8-0 ACC) and #3 Notre Dame (10-1 Ind) followed by the Spartans to round out our four playoff spots. The Tigers defeated Wake Forest (3-8, 1-6 ACC) 33-13 while the Fighting Irish toppled Boston College (3-8, 0-7 ACC) 19-16.

Currently on the outside looking in #5 Iowa (11-0, 7-0 Big Ten) and are also the only other undefeated team left in the country besides #2 Clemson. The Hawkeyes just need to stay the course, remain perfect and you can be certain they will end up in the playoffs because if nothing changes they will end up playing the Spartans for the Big Ten Championship. Iowa defeated Purdue (2-9, 1-6 Big Ten) 40-20 Saturday.

Iowa Hawkeyes

#6 Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) pulled out the win over #13 TCU (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) 30-29 and after the Buckeyes, #8 Baylor ( 9-1, 6-1 Big 12) moves up after knocking off then undefeated #12 Oklahoma St. (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) 45-35.

#9 Stanford (9-2, 8-1 Pac 12) , #10 Florida (10-1, 7-1 SEC) close out the WOYSM Top 10 while #11 Michigan (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) starts out the next tier, all three moved up in the poll benefiting from both the Cowboys and Horned Frogs losses. Stanford defeated California (6-5, 3-5 Pac 12)              35-22, while the Gators beat Florida Atlantic (2-9, 2-5 C USA) 20-14.

Michigan defeated Penn St. (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten) 28-16.

Also moving up in the WOYSM Top 25 from the 14th thru 20th spots were #14 Northwestern (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten), #15 Florida St (9-2, 6-2 ACC) , #16 N. Carolina (10-1, 7-0 ACC), #17 UCLA (8-3, 5-3 Pac 12), #18 Toledo 9-1, 6-1 Mid American), #19 W. Kentucky  (9-2, 7-0 C USA) and #20 Navy (9-1, 7-0 American Ath.). All seven teams won Saturday and benefited from losses by #21 LSU (7-3, 4-3 SEC) and #22 Utah (8-3, 5-3 Pac 12). The Tigers lost to Mississippi (8-3, 5-2 SEC) 38 to 17 while the Utes were beaten by the UCLA 17 to 9.

Northwestern defeated Wisconsin (8-3, 5-2 Big Ten) 13-7, It was Florida St over Chattanooga (8-3) 52-13, N. Carolina over Virginia Tech (5-6, 3-4 ACC) 30-27, Toledo beat Bowling Green (8-3, 6-1 Mid American) 44-28, W. Kentucky smashed Florida Int. (5-7, 3-5 C USA) 63-7 and Navy kept on winning defeating Tulsa (5-6, 2-5 American Ath.) 44-21.

Wash. St. Cougars

WOYSM welcomes #24 Oregon (8-3, 6-2 Pac 12) back into the poll for the third time this season and also for the first time ever #25 Washington St. (8-3, 6-2 Pac 12). The Ducks beat USC (7-4, 5-3 Pac 12) 44-28 and the Cougars defeated Colorado (4-8, 1-7 Pac 12) 27-3.

This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

There’s NO telling who is going to wind up in the 4-team playoff this season. Even teams like Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame need not kick back and assume they are auto locks to make the BIG (or should I say little) dance.

My Sports Mind can see a few up the higher ranked teams losing in their conference championships and for those conferences that do NOT have championship games I say shame on you and for that you should be penalized.

A few words as always about MY South Carolina Gamecocks, ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! How dare you prove me wrong like that!! Every since the Vanderbilt win, I’ve been saying that the only winnable game that remained on our schedule was the Citadel and you couldn’t even muster enough ability to beat them…. I SURE hope we find out that it was because you were looking ahead to Clemson But My Sports Mind has to believe it was just the fact that the Gamecocks have gotten that bad.

Who ever winds up with the Gamecocks head coaching position will have a job on his hands for sure, but one thing I can say for sure, Interim Head Coach, Sean Elliott won’t have to worry about it because he won’t be named the head coach.

I’d like to welcome back into the WOYSM College Top 25, The Oregon Ducks and also a hearty WOYSM welcome for the first time ever the Washington St. Cougars.

The Big-10  still leads all conferences with the most representatives (6) in the WOYSM Top 25 and the breakdown of teams per conference representing the College Top 25  Poll are as follows: Big 10=5, Pac 12=5, Big 12=4, SEC=3, ACC=3, American Athletic=2, MAC=1, Conference USA=1, Independents=1.

So Whats On Your Sports Mind about this subject?

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s
hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and appearance.

I must say you have done a fantastic job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super quick for me on Internet explorer.

    Excellent Blog!
