WOYSM NFL Top 15 (Week 9)

by Larry Leek

Can ANYONE Knock the #1 New England Patriots from the top spot? With only three teams left that’s unbeaten its beginning to look like the Patriots have a good chance to run the regular season table for a second time. If they do, can they close the deal this time? Oh WAIT we are only halfway thru the season and still have eight games left to play…. Will it matter?

When you look at the Patriots record and consider they are the defending super bowl champions, you think ok it looks like they are going to win another back to back and this time they will do it undefeated and they just might. BUT if you dig a little deeper you have to ask yourself has the Patriots really been tested? The eight opponents they have face thus far this season have a  combined 28-39 record and only 2 of their 8 opponents (#8 NY Jets & #10 Pittsburgh Steelers)  having a winning record with both just one game above .500. So for now the answer would have to be a resounding NO.

New England has already won the title for the most #1 ranks this season at 10 weeks to 0 for the rest of the NFL. So much for that.

Elsewhere in the WOYSM NFL Top 15, week 9 saw another undefeated team fall, the #4 Denver Broncos lost their first game of the season, losing at Indianapolis 27 to 24, in a game QB, Peyton Manning would more than likely have rather came away on top probably more than any other game this season. Even though the Colts came away with a huge win they also suffered a huge loss, QB, Andrew Luck will be lost for 2 to 6 weeks with an abdominal tear and Lacerated kidney. 40 year old QB, Matt Hasselbeck will get his third start of the season and is 2-0 thus far, faring much better than all other backups have this season. The rest of the backups that have played in 2015 are a combined and dismal 4-18.

Undefeated #2 Cincinnati is looking better and better each week and could be the match the Patriots have YET to face. Also undefeated #3 Carolina also though they haven’t looked pretty, they have been effective. Both teams starting QB’s (Andy Dalton & Cam Newton) are having banner seasons and have looked very impressive.

Moving up in the poll are #5 Minnesota and #6 Arizona both teams slid past #7 Green Bay who suffered their second straight loss after losing to the undefeated Panthers at 37 to 29 in Charlotte, NC.  The Cardinals were off this week while Minnesota defeated #11 St. Louis 21 to 18, The Rams fell three positions, to that slot due to the loss. After the Packers, the City of New York has back to back teams in the top 10 with the eighth ranked Jets and the #9 NY Giants who defeated Tampa Bay 32 to 18.

The #10 Pittsburgh Steelers  and #13 Oakland Raiders swapped positions after the Steelers defeated the Raiders at home 38 to 35.

After the Rams, #12 Atlanta reeling from losing 3 of their last four games fell from ninth after losing to lowly San Francisco 17 to 16 and#14 Buffalo moved up from 15th after knocking off Miami and taking their slot, defeating the Dolphins handily 33 to 17, Miami fell from the top 15 after the loss.

Moving back into the poll for the second time this season taking advantage of the Dolphins loss, #15 Seattle has looked better as of late. The Seahawks were idle this week and the first team this season to move into the poll without so much as lifting a helmet.

This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

28 and 39 with only 2-teams boasting a winning record? If My Sports Mind didn’t know better I consider and also accuse New England of bullying. Maybe that’s another gate we can stick on the Patriots GOOD name. Bullygate and you heard it here first. Not to mention they beat up on my wounded, wheel chair wielding Cowboys (May they RIP) in week #4. Playing a schedule like the Patriots have enjoyed CAN and in most cases has come back to haunt teams and My Sports Mind feels the same will likely happen to the Pats. Maybe the Giants will do it to them again this weekend.

Speaking of MY Cowboys, now 2-6-0 and already two games worse than all of last season. I can’t help but think since we have taken it this far, why not take it all the way….

Did I say the word TANK? Of course not. But since the subject HAS been brought up and the fact that aging Dallas QB, Tony Romo, often injured is getting NO younger, wouldn’t this be a great time to go ahead and enter the DRAFT DERBY?

My Sports Mind see’s this young rebuilt Cowboys team that was rebuilt around an aging QB in Romo in need of just one more piece to the puzzle that could send the team into another decade of dominance and that’s a YOUNG franchise QB to go with them. Just a thought mind you 😉 .

Cincinnati and Carolina have both looked great with a slight edge to the Bengals, ONLY because Panther QB, Cam Newton has had little support and is being forced to do too much and he will wear down before the season is over you can mark My Sports Mind on that.

Minnesota could be ready to challenge the Packers for the division crown with the two teams tied and Green Bay suffering from a two game losing streak, the Vikings are looking up to the challenge as of recent. Arizona has been a mainstay in the top 10 all season and will definitely be around come the post, especially since NO ONE seems good enough in the NFC West to take them out, unless the Rams can improve.

When you look at the rest of the WOYSM NFL Top 15 you only see mediocre teams going by their records and performances on the field this season. Even super bowl runner up Seattle hasn’t looked near the team they were the last two years, so My Sports Mind cannot see any of them becoming much of a postseason threat UNLESS it is the Seahawks.

So Whats On Your Sports Mind about this subject?
