WOYSM College Top 25 (Week 10)
A huge shake up occurred on top of the mountain in the WOYSM College Football Top 25 this weekend with the #1, #3 and #5 ranked teams all falling just to name a few. Overall nine teams in the Top 25 lost with five of those teams losing to unranked teams, Beginning with the former #1 team.
#8 Michigan St. (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten) formerly #1 was defeated by unranked Nebraska (4-6, 2-4 Big Ten) 39 to 38, while #10 TCU (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) ranked #3 last week lost to new #7 Oklahoma St. (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) who moved up 3-slots.
In perhaps the biggest SEC showdown of the season #9 LSU (7-1, 4-1 SEC) #5 last week, lost in a mild upset to #3 Alabama (8-1, 5-1 SEC) 30 to 16, also moving up 3-positions.
#1 Ohio St. ( 9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) moved into the top spot again taking the lead back over Michigan St. 6 weeks to 5 in the race for the most #1 rankings (Including the preseason rank) and that should secure the title for the Buckeyes, now the question is, can they hold on to the #1 spot for the rest of the year?
#2 Baylor (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) narrowly escaped with a win over unranked Kansas St. 31 to 24 and moving into the Top 4 for the first time #4 Clemson (9-0, 6-0 ACC) defeated #18 Florida St. (7-5, 5-2 ACC) 23 to 13, The Seminoles fell seven spots after the loss, also moving up in the Top 10 were #5 Notre Dame (8-1 Ind) and #6 Stanford (8-1, 7-0 Pac 12).
Oklahoma St, Michigan St and LSU who all fell, round out the Top 10.
The first seven teams in the second half of the Top 20 all moved up benefiting from losses by the Seminoles and #21 Memphis who lost to unranked Navy 45 to 20 and #22 Toledo who also lost to unranked N. Illinois 32 to 27.
Even though #11 Iowa (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) and #19 Houston (9-0, 5-0 American) are still unbeaten as well as the Cowboys, it appears for now at least that they will be left out of the four team playoff, mainly because of their schedule and the fact that they haven’t played any ranked teams except that the Hawkeyes did manage to beat #17 Northwestern (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) and of course #7 Oklahoma St. with their lone victory against then #3 Horned frogs.
#20 N. Carolina ( 8-1, 5-0 ACC) moved up four notches and if they can continue winning, they appear to be on track to play #4 Clemson for the ACC title.
Entering the WOYSM Top 25 for the first time this season are #23 Temple (8-1, 5-0 American) after beating SMU (1-8, 0-5 American) 60 to 40 and #24 W. Kentucky (8-2, 6-0 C-USA) who beat Fla. Atlantic (2-7, 2-4 C-USA) 35 to 19. Returning to the Top 25 for the second time this season is #25 Mississippi St. (7-2. 3-2 SEC) who beat Missouri (4-5, 1-5 SEC) 31 to 13.
This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:
Well Ohio St. has recaptured the #1 spot in the poll, since the Spartans could NOT continue their winning ways by losing to an unranked and not very good Nebraska team and not to forget these two (Spartans & Buckeyes) meet in two weeks. My Sports Mind tells me that it could get even worse for Michigan St. who had control of their own destiny and let it slip right thru their fingers, giving full control back to their conference rival Buckeyes.
The NCAA committee has moved the Clemson Tigers into the drivers seat, BUT going by the final scores in some of their games My Sports Mind don’t feel they are worthy and regardless of how they finish in the ACC , I do not think they make it to the title game, but we shall see. Right now if I had to pick a favorite to win it all, My Sports Mind would have to go with the #3 Alabama Crimson Tide.
My South Carolina Gamecocks (3-6, 1-6 SEC) got down early and tried to come back too late, losing to Tennessee (5-4, 3-3 SEC) 27 to 24. The Gamecocks were driving late with a chance to win or tie and just like their season they fumbled it away while deep in the Vols. territory.
One good thing is the fact that even though they got down 14 to 0 in the first quarter and playing in Neyland Stadium, the Gamecocks never gave up and had a chance to pull it out until the fumble sealed the win for Tennessee. South Carolina’s final three games are all at home but two of the three are against ranked teams, they play #14 Florida next week, then the Citadel before playing in-state rival #4 Clemson and nothing would please My Sports Mind more than to see My Gamecocks play the spoiler role and ruin the Tigers title hopes BUT, good luck with that. GO Gamecocks!!
WOYSM welcomes newcomers the #23 Temple Owls and #24 W. Kentucky Hill Toppers both teams enter the poll for the first time ever and also welcoming back to the poll for their second time this season the #25 Mississippi St. Bulldogs.
It’s really tough that undefeated teams like #7 Oklahoma St, #11 Iowa and #19 Houston will more than likely be left out of the four team playoff even though they haven’t lost and the fact that the teams they have to play as far as conference obligations are concerned is what really cost them in the end as far as positioning and in My Sports Mind further solidifies the fact that the playoff field needs to be expanded to either 8 or 10 teams to truly make the college post season perfect.
The Big-10 are now leads all conferences with the most representatives (5) in the WOYSM Top 25 and the breakdown of teams per conference representing the College Top 25 are as follows: Big 10=5, SEC=4, Big 12 = 4, Pac 12=3, ACC=3, American Athletic=3, MAC=1, Conference USA=1, Independents=1.
