WOYSM College Football Top 25 (Week 9)

by Larry Leek

Since it was Halloween on Saturday you would have expected some eerie things to take place right? Like maybe some of the highly ranked teams getting upset by some nobody. Well that didn’t happen, BUT something strange did in fact happen.Instead of one of the WOYSM Top 25 Teams getting upset in fact only two of the teams in the entire top 25 lost and those teams were Georgia (5-3, 3-3 SEC)  and California (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) both of whom fell from the top 25 after their losses. The Bulldogs fell 27 to 3 to #16 Florida (7-1, 5-1 SEC) which also was the only game this week pitting Top 25 teams against one another. Also the Golden Bears lost 27 to 21 to USC (5-3, 3-2 Pac-12).

So this weeks poll looks exactly like last weeks except that all of the teams that were ranked below the Bulldogs (#18) moved up one slot. California was ranked #25.

#1 Michigan St. (8-0, 4-0 Big-10) and #2 Ohio St. (8-0, 4-0 Big-10)  were both idle this week and with the Spartans still holding on to the #1 spot they are now tied with the Buckeyes for the most weeks as the #1 ranked team at five weeks each (Including the preseason poll). But don’t forget these two teams meet on Nov. 21st.

Also idle this week were #4 Baylor (7-0, 4-0 Big-12), #5 LSU (7-0, 4-0 SEC), #6 Alabama (7-1, 4-1 SEC), #17 Toledo 7-0, 4-0 MAC) and #20 Northwestern (6-2, 2-2 Big-10) further explaining why so few teams in the Top 25 lost.

WOYSM welcomes two new comers into the Top 25 for the first time this season, #24 North Carolina (7-1, 4-0 ACC) and #25 Marshall (8-1, 5-0 Conf-USA).

The SEC  and Big-10 are now tied with the most representatives in the WOYSM Top 25 and the breakdown of teams per conference representing the College Top 25 are as follows: SEC=5, Big 10=5, Big 12 = 4, Pac 12=3, ACC=3, American Athletic=2, MAC=1, Conference USA=1, Independents=1.

This Is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

With the BIG showdowns looming in the upcoming weeks only one of the WOYSM TOP 5 Teams played this week and that was #3 TCU  and they had no trouble routing W. Virginia 40 to 10.

#10 Oklahoma St. received a scare in their game with unranked Texas Tech in a game where the final score looked more like a college basketball game than football. After trailing at halftime to the Red Raiders 38 to 28 the Cowboys managed to take the lead in the third and had to fight off Texas Tech in the forth before winning 70 to 53.

Before all is said and done however, there will be a big shake up in the WOYSM Top 10 Teams being the fact that the Top 6 will all face their Top 6 conference counterpart down the road. So My Sports Mind can see its really going to get ugly very quickly as the season draws to what will become a bitter end for a few teams that have been mainstays in the Top 6 pretty much all season.

My South Carolina Gamecocks fell deeper into the SEC East after losing a closely contested game to Texas A&M 35 to 28. The issue I had with the game and every game they have played is this and it’s been this way for the Gamecocks over the last two seasons.  Everytime  South Carolina’s offense manages to put points on the board and anytime they get the lead on their opponent it never fails, the defense will walk right back on the field and let the other team march right down the field and right back into the game and score on their ensuing possession, killing any and all momentum gained. To My Sports Mind  that’s GOT to be a huge, huge let down for the offense as well.

Also I do NOT feel the University is handling their coaching vacancy in the correct manner. When you take everything into consideration, especially the state of their recruiting. When you have a recruiting class ranked below #30 that’s bad enough, but when you have some of those that have already given a verbal to the school hinging their final decision on who the schools next head coach will be plus the uncommitted ones are not willing to wait around too long to find out My Sports Mind has to ask, ” WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON” ?  With the 2015 season already toast for the Gamecocks, it don’t appear that anyone’s very concerned about 2016 to me.

Also it’s not fair to Interim head coach, Sean Elliott for the school to delay their decision. I have been impressed with the intensity and passion that Coach Elliott has shown since taking over and whoever the University decides to hire as the head coach in My Sports Mind  should really consider keeping Elliott on their staff IF Elliot is not name the HC and to be honest might not be a bad idea.

Also I want to give a BIG WOYSM welcome to #24 North Carolina and #25 Marshall  for making their first ever appearance in the WOYSM Top 25.  After the Tar Heels lost their opening game to MY Gamecocks they have managed to reel off seven straight wins, while Marshall’s only loss came back in week two to the MAC’s, Ohio Bobcats.

So Whats On Your Sports Mind about this subject?
