WOYSM College Football Top 25 (Week 8)

by Larry Leek

#1 Michigan St. (8-0, 4-0 Big-10) held on to the top spot this week in the WOYSM College Top 25 Poll after thrashing Indiana (4-4, 0-4 Big-10) 52 to 26. The Hoosiers hung in there for the first half, but it was ALL Spartans in the last two quarters.

With Michigan St. hanging onto the top spot for the fourth consecutive week it certainly makes the race for the #1 rankings over the rest of the season much more interesting.

If not for the preseason poll the Spartans and #2 Ohio St. (8-0, 4-0 Big-10) would be deadlocked at four weeks each, but with the Buckeyes getting the nod in the preseason poll they still maintain a narrow one week lead 5 to 4.

The Top 4 teams in fact retain their positions in the poll with only #11 Florida St. (6-1, 4-1-ACC) falling out of the top five after their loss to unranked Georgia Tech (3-5, 1-4-ACC) 22 to 16. #5 LSU moved into the Seminoles old spot  after the loss.

#6 Alabama (7-1, 4-1-SEC), #7 Clemson (7-0, 4-0-ACC) and #8 Notre Dame (6-1-Ind) all moved up one notch also benefiting from Florida St’s loss. Also moving up were #9 Stanford (6-1, 5-0-Pac-12) and #10 Oklahoma St. (7-0, 4-0-Big-12) after #15 Utah (6-1, 3-1-Pac 12) was beaten soundly by unranked USC (4-3, 2-2-Pac 12) in a game that many had predicted that the Trojans would win.

With both the Seminoles and Utes falling out of the Top 10 into the middle of the pack it appears their National Championship hopes have all but faded.

Other teams that moved up WOYSM Top 25  were #12 Iowa (7-0, 3-0-Big 10), #13 Oklahoma (6-1, 4-1-Big 12) and #14 Memphis (7-0, 3-0-American). After Utah #16 Florida  (6-1, 4-1-SEC) and #17 Toledo  (7-0, 4-0-Mid American) both moved up, leap frogging #18 Georgia (5-2, 3-2-SEC), who suffered from the “fall while idle” syndrome. The Bulldogs will have a chance to prove us wrong next weekend when they play Florida in Gainesville.

#19 Michigan (5-2, 2-1-Big 10), #20 UCLA (5-2. 2-2-Pac 12), both moved up. #21 Northwestern  (6-2, 2-2-Big 10) stayed put.  #22 Ole Miss (6-2, 3-1-SEC) and #23 Houston  (7-0, 4-0-American) also moved up while #23 Texas A&M (5-2, 2-2-SEC), #24 California (5-2, 2-2-Pac 12), both fell.

This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

First of all If Michigan St. can just win one more they will tie the Buckeyes in the race for the #1 ranking title and they have a great chance to pull up two weeks on Ohio St. and get a little cushion before the two teams meet in Columbus, OH. in three weeks on the 21st.

The Spartans are Idle next week then they play at Nebraska and home against Maryland before the big meeting between the two teams. Both are very winnable games and MY Sports MInd tells me they will.

Ohio St. is also idle next weekend then they are home against Minnesota before playing at Illinois the following weekend so another Message that My Sports Mind is getting, is a near guarantee that both teams WILL be undefeated coming into the game. So the game has all the makings of an early National Championship in its own right.

The following weekend the Top 4 teams will take another hit as Baylor and TCU square off in Ft. Worth, TX. That is providing both of those two remain unbeaten until then.

#4 Baylor is also off next weekend and they better enjoy the rest cause after their bye week they play at Kansas St. then they hit murder’s row with three straight games against WOYSM Top 25 Teams. They get #13 Oklahoma at home before playing on the road at #10 Oklahoma St. and at #3 TCU and My Sports Mind tells me they best not get caught looking ahead when they play Kansas St.

#3 TCU’s road won’t be any easier, they have no bye week. Next weekend they are home against West Virginia then they play at #10 Oklahoma St, then they get Kansas at home at #13 Oklahoma before their matchup with #4 Baylor.

If LSU and Clemson can remain unbeaten they would have the chance to slide into the Top 4 since all of the current Top 4 teams are set up so that two must fall out in the up coming weeks, also lets not forget that #5 LSU and #6 Alabama square off in Baton Rouge on Nov. 7th thus eliminating one if the two and also on the same day #7 Clemson is home against #11 Florida St.

So as you can well see, There’s some GREAT football ahead with MAJOR playoff implications on the line as the season winds down and My Sports Mind will be ready for the show.

My South Carolina Gamecocks were idle this weekend. They kick back in to action next weekend and it’s not going to be easy by any means, BUT if by some miracle they could win out they will need to win at #24 Texas A&M, at Tennessee , then home against #16 Florida, home against the Citadel and ARCH Rival #7 Clemson. They would then be 8-4, 4-4-SEC and actually end up with a decent bowl. But when you look at the schedule, My Sports Mind can only feel good about the Citadel so COME ON Gamecocks!!!! Prove me wrong, I’d like that.

The Sec still has the most representatives in the WOYSM Top 25 and the breakdown of teams per conference representing the College Top 25 are as follows: SEC=6, Big 10=5, Pac 12=4, Big 12=4, ACC=2, American Athletic=2, Mid American=1, Independents=1.
