With This Weeks Mediocre Schedule, Are Upsets Possible?

by Larry Leek

Texas A&M
 VS        Ole Miss

With the only one game this week on Saturday’s lineup pitting two teams ranked in the WOYSM Top 25 and with both of those teams well out of the playoff hunt, it doesn’t appear that the top 25 will have much of a shake up OR will it?

With the SEC matchup as the only game left this week involving ranked teams, when #14 Texas A&M  (5-1, 2-1 SEC) travels to Oxford, MS. to take on #24 Ole Miss  (5-2, 2-1 SEC) the game don’t exactly appease the average football fan UNLESS of course you are an Aggie or Rebel fan. Both teams are coming off losses last week. The Aggies lost to Alabama   (6-1, 3-1 SEC) 41 to 23 and Ole Miss was upset by Memphis  (7-0, 3-0 American) 37 to 24.

The only other game which featured two teams in the top 25 this week was played on Thursday night as #23 UCLA (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) upset #17 California (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) en-route to a 40 to 24 blow out.

So we already have one upset, could there be more?

If you look a little deeper into this weeks schedule there are are few diamonds in the rough that could produce a few upsets.

In the weeks to follow week #8 there will be some HUGE games in store with definite playoff implications involved, but if some teams can find it within themselves to play the spoiler role, some of those HUGE games could become not so huge almost to the point of meaningless.

Lets look at some of those possibilities in this weeks schedule involving ranked teams that could fall to the unranked.

Texas Tech     VS     Oklahoma

The Texas Tech Red Raiders  (5-2, 2-2 Big-12) could give the #15 Oklahoma Sooners  (5-1, 2-1 Big-12) all they can handle in Norman, OK Saturday. The Red Raiders already have racked up impressive wins over Iowa St. 66 to 31 and Kansas 30 to 20. They also beat a mediocre Arkansas team but the impressive part was they did it in Fayetteville.

Even though Texas Tech lost to #3 TCU they only lost by a score of 55 to 52, and though both defense’s were no shows, the Red Raiders offense proved to be just as explosive as the high powered Horned Frogs.

On the other hand the Sooners looked impressive thru their first four games going undefeated before losing 24 to 17 to a hapless Texas team that was 1-4 and had gotten blown out by TCU the week prior 50 to 7.

Indiana     VS     Michigan St

Could #1 Michigan St (7-0, 3-0 Big-10), Fresh off their miracle last second win over #22 Michigan last week be primed for what would be the upset of the season thus far as the unranked Indiana Hoosiers (4-3, 0-3 Big-10) come to town?

The Hoosiers put up a decent showing in week 5 at home against #2 Ohio St. losing by only a TD 34 to 27 but after starting the season 4-0-0 the Hoosiers have lost their last three straight games.

Utah     VS     USC

The other games that have upset possibilities #10 Utah (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) at unranked USC (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12). The Trojans were ranked in the Top 25 twice this season climbing as high as the #10 slot that Utah now occupies.

Clemson     VS     Miami FL.

In the ACC, #6 Clemson  (6-0, 3-0 ACC) travels to Miami, FL. to take on the Hurricanes (4-2, 1-1 ACC). Even though the Tigers look to be superior Miami has the talent to pull off the upset but will the Hurricanes lose velocity once they run a field?

This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:

I have to say this weeks schedule LOOKS to be mediocre at best. BUT just when you think that, the end result can and has often been cause for the bookies in Vegas to throw a big victory party.

My Sports Mind  tells me that the only team with an upset this week will NOT be #22 UCLA.

After the dreadful showing put up by #15 Oklahoma against an even more dreadful Texas Longhorn team My Sports Mind has to give the edge to Texas Tech who hasn’t looked near as bad. I would in fact consider this the best upset possibility of the weekend and if I was going to give the bookies in Vegas any of my money on a game this week with the hope if getting it back along with a bonus, this is the game I would pick.                                                                                          Final Score: Texas Tech 48 Oklahoma 34

I don’t look for an upset between Texas A&M at Ole Miss, even though the Rebels are home My Sports Mind see’s the Aggies taking care of business on the road in Oxford. Ole Miss seems to be getting worse as the season progress’s.          Final Score: Texas A&M 35 Ole Miss 24

Even though #1 Michigan St. is coming off a big emotional win against state rival #22 Michigan, My Sports Mind tells me that Indiana don’t have enough in the tank to pull off the upset, even though the Spartans could be primed for a fall. If Michigan St. can get the win they will have next week off to nurse up any wounds before their final four games of which the first three are all home games including their huge game against #2 Ohio St.                                                           Final Score: Mich. St. 45 Indiana 20

Another upset possibility and probably MY next favorite after Texas Tech is the game between #10 Utah at USC. Even though the Trojans have looked good at times and bad at times and even though they were ranked in the Top 25 twice this season as high as #10, they haven’t managed to beat a ranked team in two tries. losing to #9 Notre Dame and #12 Stanford. Maybe the the third time, plus being home will be the charm. My Sports Mind say’s the Trojans will get their third strike instead.                                                                                                                                                                                     Final Score: Utah 27 USC 24

The Miami Hurricanes will try to blow over the Clemson Tigers at the Orange Bowl and they do have the talent to upset the Tigers but again My Sports Mind  just DON’T see it happening.                                                                                                  Final Score: Clemson 41 Miami 17

I can’t close without saying a few words about MY South Carolina Gamecocks  (3-4, 1-4 SEC). The Gamecocks are off this week and it probably couldn’t come at a better time for the team. After all the Gamecocks have suffered thru this season, losing starting QBConnor Mitch  (Hip & Shoulder) in week 2, RB, Brandon Wilds (Concussion) in week 4 (who returned last week). Then they suffered their biggest loss Head Coach, Steve Spurrier (Retirement) after their loss to LSU on October 10th. \

South Carolina returns to action next Saturday at #14  Texas A&M. Lets hope one week off is enough and as much as My Sports Mind hates to admit it, I don’t think it will be. But since the game is not until next weekend I hold off on the final score FOR now….

So Whats On Your Sports Mind about this subject?
