WOYSM College Football Top 25 (Week 7)
#1 Michigan St. continued it’s reign (If you want to call it that), over it’s state rival Michigan but it took an amazing last second play right out of The Advanced Magicians hand(s)book as time expired to do so. It looked like Michigan St. was all but defeated when out of no where the Spartans received the gift of a lifetime from Michigan.
Michigan Punter, Blake O’Neil couldn’t handle a bad snap and ended up actually bobbling the ball which looked like a lateral gone bad, Spartan’s DB, #20 Jalen Watts-Jackson scooped the ball right out of the air and returned it 39 yds. for the winning touchdown with no time left on the clock as Michigan St. defeated Michigan 27 to 23.
The ensuing pileup in the end zone after the unbelievable play actually caused the hero of the game (trapped at the bottom) to dislocate his hip. Jackson was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in good condition.
Also a fan at Michigan Stadium had a heart attack on the final play of the game. Sources stated that the paramedics that transported the man to the hospital said he was listed in stable condition, not sure which team he was a fan of.
There were also incidents of small fires reported around campus, however police reported the fires were quickly extinguished with out injuries or serious damage.
In other top matchups, #7 Alabama defeated #14 Texas A&M 41 to 23. The Aggies fell from 10th after the loss. #24 Ole Miss was upset by #19 Memphis 37 to 24, the Rebels were the #11 team in last weeks poll while Memphis was #25. #13 Iowa (moving up from #15) blew out #21 Northwestern 40 to 10 (the Wildcats were ranked #18 last week).
Nothing changed in the top 9 Teams, Utah becomes the newest member of the WOYSM Top 10, moving up from #12, taking advantage of the losses by Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
The rest of the Top 25 has a few changes #11 Oklahoma St. and #12 Stanford start out the second half of the top 20, next are the #13 Hawkeyes followed by #14 Texas A&M (falling from 10th) and #15 Oklahoma.
Georgia even though they did not play moved up to 16th taking advantage of the loss by the Gators as did California. Memphis and Toledo both moved up while Northwestern, Michigan, UCLA and Ole Miss all fell after their losses. The newest edition into the WOYSM Top 25 are the undefeated Houston Cougars 6-0-0, who move into the poll for the first time this season.
This is Whats On My Sports Mind about this subject:
Yes I know many do not consider the Michigan St. Spartans to be the #1 team in land but with such an amazing win yesterday maybe their destiny is sealed, so WOYSM will go along for the ride as long as the boat doesn’t sink. Besides it makes the race for the team with the most #1 rankings for the season a bit interesting since there’s only one other team in the race and that’s WOYSM’s current #2 team the Ohio St. Buckeyes who actually lead the race currently five weeks to the Spartans three (which includes the preseason poll).
With the top 10 teams remaining the same thru the first nine slots and the top 4 teams only changing once it’s evident that for teams outside the top 10 penetrating into the top 4 is going to be very tough indeed, so for all teams currently NOT in the WOYSM Top 10, My Sports Mind has to think that all of them can go ahead and start planning for a bowl appearance but not an appearance in the playoffs. Even though after witnessing the end of the Michigan St/Michigan game yesterday, nothing will surprise me. After all over the years there may have been only one miracle on ice, but there’s been hundreds on the gridiron WITH or without ice….
WOYSM welcomes the Houston Cougars 6-0-0 into the Top 25 poll for the first time ever. Also congratulations to MY South Carolina Gamecocks and appointed interim coach Sean Elliott for snapping their four game losing streak thus getting Coach Elliott the win in his coaching debut with the Gamecocks.
South Carolina defeated Vanderbilt 19 to 10 in a game where the loser takes over last place in the SEC East. I would love to see My Gamecocks take this victory under Interim coach Elliott and use it to motivate them thru the rest of the season by winning out, but after watching the game My Sports Mind still see’s the Citadel as the only real winnable game,
For Coach Elliott to have a realistic shot In My Sports Mind at retaining the head coaching position at South Carolina, he needs to put an ALL out effort into recruiting and try to bring it back up from the depths it has sunk to over the last two years. If he could pull them back into the top 20 maybe it will be enough for Gamecock AD, Ray Tanner to give him the nod.
The Sec still has the most representatives in the WOYSM Top 25 and the breakdown of teams per conference representing the College Top 25 are as follows: SEC=6, Big 10=5, Pac 12=4, Big 12=4, ACC=2, American Athletic=2, Mid American=1, Independents=1.
