How Does Your Bracket Fare ?
If you picked #1 seed from the east Villanova to make the final four, you already have lost one third of your final four & you can’t really say they were upset by #8 seed NC State, especially since the ACC is 10-0 thus far in the tournament.
Other teams that have made unexpected early exits are #3 seed in the south region, Iowa St. who lost in rd. 1 to #14 seed Alabama Birmingham & south region #4 seed Georgetown lost in a mild upset in rd. 2 to #5 seed Utah. Teams that have so far performed as expected are #1 seeds in the midwest, west & south regions Kentucky, Wisconsin & Duke. Other teams that have played as expected thus far are #2 seeds Arizona, Kansas, Virginia & Gonzaga as All four are still alive & Arizona has already advanced to the sweet 16, after defeating Ohio St. in Rd. 2. Two of the #3 seeds remain, Oklahoma & Notre dame while the other two Iowa St. & Baylor were both upset in Rd. 1 & three of the #4 seeds are still in contention Maryland, Louisville & North Carolina after Georgetown was eliminated in Rd. 2. Ironically three #5 & #7 seeds are still alive while two #11 seeds, Dayton & UCLA are as well. You can’t help but notice what the ACC has accomplished thus far with all seven teams still alive & you have to consider that the ACC is still the king of the college basketball hill. When you also consider the tough inter-conference schedules these teams must endure during the regular season, it’s much in comparison to the SEC in Football & when you look at the fact that undefeated Kentucky’s conference schedule was nothing in comparison you have to wonder if UK has to face off against these ACC teams in the upcoming rounds & possibly in the championship game as well, it could GREATLY increase the possibility of the Wildcats falling short of their goal of going undefeated & winning it all. If you look at how the brackets are shaping up, it is possible that Kentucky would have to defeat #4 seed Maryland in the sweet 16 & #3 seed Notre Dame in the elite 8 & also #4 seed UNC in the final four. thou many do not expect Louisville to make it to the final four, it could happen, but even if Louisville is eliminated there is the still the possibility & very much so that the Wildcats could face either #1 or #2 seed’s Duke or Virginia for the national championship. So should Kentucky end up facing 3 or 4 ACC teams down the road, could they survive such a task & win it ALL?
This is Whats On My Sports Mind on this subject.
The brackets do definitely tell us a story, one thing that you can see, is the fact that the #1 & 2 seeds are still a force as expected while the mid seeds are proving to be formidable opponents as well. You can also see that like the SEC in football, the ACC still rules in basketball. You have to be concerned about how well Kentucky will fare in the next three rounds IF the opponents wind up being from the ACC, because even if they should face both ACC teams & win them both, it would almost certainly take its toll on the team. If they have to go two steps further & face ACC teams in the final four & the championship game, all of which are definite possibilities, you have to believe their run at an undefeated championship season would surely be in serious jeapordy, #1 because you have to admit that UK’s inter-conference schedule of difficulty has been nothing in comparison to any of the ACC teams. So IF that should turn out to be the case, I would have to pick either Duke OR Virginia to defeat them IF they even make it past Maryland, Notre Dame or UNC & if the Wildcats should happen to NOT make the championship, you have to believe that somewhere around 70% of all the brackets filled out would be BUSTED. I have felt all along that Duke could beat them in the championship, thou I’m not so certain about Virginia, however if Kentucky should have to go thru other ACC teams in order to get to Virginia in the title game then it would become a more likely possibility in My Sports Mind. So will Kentucky survive to claim the trophy OR will they fall short ? and IF they have to face off against Maryland, Notre Dame & UNC in the upcoming rounds will they even make it to the championship ?
