Selection Sunday, The Obvious And The Bubble Busters
It’s that time again. Time for the NCAA selection committee to announce the 64 team field for the 2015 NCAA tournament. There are the obvious of course, Kentucky can make it 34-0, IF they can beat Arkansas in the SEC tournament championship game today & there are those that are hoping to be bubble busters, like Temple & Oklahoma St. appear to have a good chance at bursting the bubble & making the tournament, while other teams like the Miami Hurricanes & Texas could be left on the outside, looking in.
Many teams have already punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament & there are still quite a few teams on the bubble with the selection committee announcing the field later today, Full coverage of the selections begins at 1:00 PM today on ESPN. There will be quite a few teams that will be crushed when they do NOT hear their names called today teams like the Murray St. Racers who completed the season with a perfect conference record (16-0), could find their selves left out of the dance, even though probably all of the bubble teams NOT selected will make the NIT tournament many consider the NIT to stand for Not In Tournament. So who which teams will make the NCAA Tournament & which teams will be left out? Below is a list of teams that have locked up bids & some of those teams that are on the bubble & also
Whats On My Sports Mind about who I think will make the field & who will have their bubble BUSTED.
Teams that have Locked up bids:
American Athletic Conference: Cincinnati Bearcats & SMU Mustangs
Atlantic 10: Davidson Wildcats, Dayton Flyers & Virginia Commonwealth Univ. Rams
ACC: Virginia Cavaliers, Duke Bluedevils, North Carolina Tarheels, North Carolina St. Wolfpack, Louisville Cardinals & Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Big 12: Iowa St. Cyclones, Oklahoma Sooners, W. Virginia Mountaineers, Kansas Jayhawks & Baylor Bears
Big East: Georgetown Hoyas, Villanova Wildcats, Butler Bulldogs, Providence Friars, St. Johns Red Storm & Xavier Musketeers
Big 10: Maryland Terrapins, Michigan St. Spartans, Iowa Hawkeyes, Ohio St. Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers & Purdue Boilermakers
Mountain West: San Diego St. Aztecs
Pack 12: Arizona Wildcats, Utah Utes & Oregon Ducks
SEC : Kentucky Wildcats, Georgia Bulldogs & Arkansas Razorbacks
Some @ large Locks:
Gonzaga Bullgogs, Northern Iowa Panthers & Wichita St. Shockers
Some of the teams that are on the NCAA bubble are:
Big 12: Oklahoma St. Cowboys 18-13 (8-10) & Texas Longhorns 20-13 (8-10)
Big 10: Indiana Hoosiers 20-13 (9-9)
Mountain West: Colorado St. Rams 27-6 (13-5) & Boise St. Broncos 25-8 (14-4)
Pac 12: UCLA Bruins 20-13 (11-7)
SEC: LSU Tigers 22-10 (11-7) & Mississippi Rebels 20-12 (11-7)
After all the slots have been filled by top 25 teams & teams that have won their conference tournaments, strength of schedule, the results of top teams played on that schedule are major factors in determining who will fill the final slots for the NCAA tournament. I HAVE to tip my hat to Murray St. for the perfect conference record & in the end I do think they WILL make the tournament BUT its highly possible they could be left out. Others that I believe will make the dance are LSU & Mississippi, Oklahoma St. & Temple. In the end the big question IS can anyone out there beat Kentucky? In My Sports Mind I have to say YES, will it happen? That remains to be seen. If I had to pick a team that I think are the odds on favorite to beat them I’d still have to sat the same thing I said back in January. Duke can beat them IF they have their game on & can play a virtually turnover free game & light up the boards with @ least 65% shooting from the field I think they got a good chance, because overcoming Kentucky’s defense & rebounding skills are the MAIN keys to defeating them & I think Duke can match up well against UK in both of those areas.
